Method
- Prepare the vegetables: Dice the onion and green bell pepper into small, even pieces. Mince the garlic and set the vegetables aside.
- Brown the beef: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon, until browned and no longer pink. Drain excess grease if needed.
- Sauté the vegetables: Add the diced onion and green bell pepper to the skillet. Cook for about 3–4 minutes, until they begin to soften. Add the minced garlic and cook for another 30–60 seconds, just until fragrant.
- Transfer to the slow cooker: Place the browned beef and sautéed vegetables into the slow cooker.
- Add the sauce ingredients: Pour in the tomato sauce and ketchup. Add the tomato paste, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, smoked paprika, chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.
- Combine: Stir everything thoroughly until the beef and vegetables are evenly coated with the sauce and seasonings.
- Slow cook: Cover and cook on LOW for 5–6 hours or HIGH for 3–4 hours, allowing the flavors to develop and the sauce to become thick and rich.
- Check the consistency: Toward the end of cooking, stir the mixture well. If the sauce is thinner than desired, allow it to cook uncovered briefly or transfer it to a skillet and simmer until thickened.
- Taste and adjust: Taste the finished mixture and adjust the seasoning as needed. Add a little more mustard or apple cider vinegar for tanginess, brown sugar for sweetness, or salt and Worcestershire sauce for additional savory depth.
- Toast the buns: Lightly toast the hamburger buns in a skillet, oven, toaster oven, or on a grill until lightly golden.
- Assemble: Spoon a generous portion of the hot Sloppy Joe filling onto each toasted bun. Garnish with chopped parsley or green onions if desired.
- Serve: Serve immediately with your favorite sides such as fries, coleslaw, potato salad, pickles, corn, or a fresh green salad.
Notes
For the best flavor: Brown the ground beef before adding it to the slow cooker. This creates deeper savory flavor and allows excess fat to be removed.
For thicker Sloppy Joes: Let the mixture cook uncovered briefly near the end, or simmer it in a skillet until it reaches your preferred consistency.
For less sweetness: Reduce the brown sugar and ketchup slightly and add a little extra mustard or apple cider vinegar.
For spicy Sloppy Joes: Add cayenne pepper, crushed red pepper flakes, diced jalapeño, or hot sauce.
For cheesy Sloppy Joes: Add cheddar, American, or provolone cheese to the toasted buns before adding the hot filling.
For meal prep: The cooked filling can be refrigerated for approximately 3–4 days in an airtight container.
For freezing: Freeze the cooked filling separately from the buns for best results. Thaw in the refrigerator before reheating.
Gluten-free option: Use certified gluten-free hamburger buns and verify that the Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, and other packaged ingredients are gluten-free.
Low-carb or keto option: The traditional recipe is not low-carb or keto, but it can be adapted using a low-carb bun or lettuce wrap and reducing or replacing the added sugars.
