The Night I Realized I Had Stopped Enjoying Cooking

I remember the exact evening because dinner was pasta.

Nothing special. Just pasta, jarred sauce, and the last bit of Parmesan sitting in the refrigerator door.

I had been standing in the kitchen for almost an hour, scrolling through recipes on my phone and trying to decide what to make. Every recipe seemed to require ingredients I did not have, equipment I did not own, or more energy than I had left at the end of the day.

Eventually, I gave up.

I boiled the pasta, opened the sauce, and sat down to eat feeling strangely disappointed.

Not because the dinner was bad. It was perfectly fine.

But somewhere along the way, cooking had become complicated.

I used to love it.

I loved handwritten recipes. I loved the smell of something baking in the oven on a Sunday afternoon. I loved slow cookers working quietly in the corner of the kitchen while the rest of the day happened around them.

But the internet had somehow convinced me that every meal needed to be extraordinary.

Dinner needed to look beautiful.

Dessert needed to have twelve layers.

Every recipe needed an ingredient I had never heard of before.

That night, sitting at the kitchen table with a bowl of pasta, I started thinking about the recipes I actually wanted to cook.

Simple recipes.

Comforting recipes.

Recipes that worked.

Recipes you could make on a busy Tuesday, for a holiday gathering, on a quiet weekend, or simply because you wanted something warm and homemade.

That idea eventually became Barakala.

I did not know it at the time, but that ordinary bowl of pasta was the beginning of this website.

Why Barakala Exists

Cook with Barakala

Barakala was created for people who love homemade food but do not believe cooking has to be complicated to be meaningful.

There is something wonderful about an impressive dinner party recipe.

But there is also something wonderful about a slow cooker full of chicken and dumplings.

There is joy in baking a beautiful holiday dessert.

There is also joy in making a batch of brownies because it is raining outside and you happen to have chocolate in the pantry.

Food does not need a special occasion to matter.

Some of the best meals are the ones we make without planning them weeks in advance.

They are the dinners made after a long day.

The breakfasts shared slowly on a weekend morning.

The cookies made for children, neighbors, friends, or sometimes just yourself.

They are the recipes that become part of your life because they are easy enough to make again.

That is what I wanted Barakala to be.

Not a collection of recipes that look good but never leave the screen.

A collection of recipes people actually want to make.

Again and again.

What You’ll Find at Barakala

The recipes here are inspired by the food many of us grew up loving, the meals we continue to make for the people around us, and the new ideas we discover when we decide to try something different.

You will find plenty of:

Easy Everyday Recipes

Simple meals designed for real life.

These are the recipes for busy weeknights, relaxed weekends, and those moments when you open the refrigerator and wonder what you can possibly make with what you have.

Comfort Food

Warm, filling, familiar recipes have always had a special place in my kitchen.

Think creamy dinners, hearty casseroles, slow cooker meals, homemade breads, and dishes that make the kitchen smell like something good is about to happen.

Baking and Desserts

Some people relax by watching television.

I have always believed there is something particularly calming about baking.

Measuring ingredients.

Mixing batter.

Waiting for something to rise.

Checking the oven every few minutes even though you know it will not bake any faster.

From cookies and brownies to cakes, donuts, pies, and seasonal desserts, Barakala is filled with recipes for anyone who believes dessert is occasionally a perfectly reasonable reason to turn on the oven.

Seasonal Recipes

Food has a way of marking the seasons.

Pumpkin recipes in the fall.

Warm, comforting dishes when the weather gets cold.

Festive cookies and desserts during the holidays.

Fresh and easy meals when summer arrives.

At Barakala, seasonal cooking is one of our favorite ways to make ordinary days feel a little more special.

Recipes for Celebrations

Not every celebration needs a complicated menu.

Sometimes all you need is a great dessert, a plate of homemade snacks, or a recipe that makes everyone ask for seconds.

We love creating recipes for holidays, parties, family gatherings, and those spontaneous occasions when you decide life could use cake.

A Few Things You Should Know About Me

About Clara

Most About pages will tell you that the person behind the website has always been passionate about food.

That is probably true for me.

But it is not the whole story.

I have burned cookies while standing directly in front of the oven.

I have forgotten to add salt to an entire pot of soup.

I once spent two hours making a dessert that looked absolutely nothing like the photograph.

I have learned that some recipes need to be followed exactly, while others become better when you stop worrying and simply cook.

I keep handwritten notes next to recipes I make often.

Not because I do not trust the recipe.

Because I always seem to remember something halfway through making it.

Use the bigger bowl next time.

Add more cinnamon.

Do not let this cool for only five minutes. Ten minutes means ten minutes.

My kitchen is not always perfectly organized.

My grocery lists are usually longer than necessary.

And I firmly believe that tasting something while it cooks is an important part of the cooking process.

I started collecting recipes long before Barakala existed.

Some came from old cookbooks.

Some were shared by friends.

Some were discovered after making the same dish several different ways until I finally found the version I wanted to make again.

Over time, those recipes became something bigger.

They became the beginning of this website.

How We Create Recipes for Barakala

Every recipe begins with a simple question:

Would someone actually want to make this?

From there, we focus on creating recipes that are approachable and easy to follow.

Before a recipe is published, we pay close attention to:

  • Clear and understandable instructions
  • Ingredient amounts and measurements
  • Preparation and cooking times
  • Serving suggestions
  • Helpful notes and variations
  • Storage information when relevant
  • Practical kitchen equipment
  • The overall experience of making the recipe at home

We also believe that a recipe should give you enough information to feel confident before you begin.

That is why we aim to explain the details that matter.

What ingredients you need.

What equipment may help.

What to expect during the cooking process.

And how to make adjustments when appropriate.

Because there is nothing more frustrating than discovering halfway through a recipe that you needed something the instructions forgot to mention.

Food Changes, and So Do Recipes

One of the things I have learned from cooking is that recipes are rarely completely finished.

You make something once and think it is good.

You make it again and realize it could be better.

Maybe it needs more seasoning.

Maybe the baking time needs adjusting.

Maybe a simpler method works better.

Maybe readers share an idea that makes the recipe easier for everyone.

Good recipes can evolve.

As Barakala continues to grow, older recipes may be updated to improve clarity, refresh information, or make instructions more helpful for today’s home cooks.

The goal is always the same:

To make the experience of cooking the recipe better.

One Last Thing

If you have made it this far, you are probably someone who reads About pages carefully.

I appreciate that.

I do too.

So I want to leave you with this:

You do not need a perfect kitchen to cook something wonderful.

You do not need expensive equipment.

You do not need to know every culinary term.

You do not need to make every meal from scratch.

And you definitely do not need to be perfect.

You just need a recipe you are excited to try.

Maybe it will become a new family favorite.

Maybe you will make it once and never again.

Maybe you will change half the ingredients and accidentally create something even better.

That is part of the fun.

Barakala is here to offer inspiration when you do not know what to cook, ideas when you want to try something new, and recipes you can return to when you simply want something delicious.

I am incredibly glad you found us.

So pull up a chair, look around, and hopefully find something that makes you want to head into the kitchen.

Welcome to Barakala.

Let’s make something delicious.

And if you ever have a question, want to share your experience with a recipe, or simply want to say hello, I would love to hear from you.
